CAY After School Counselor

General Function:

Under the direction of the After-School Site Director, the After-School Counselor is responsible for leading his/her assigned group in various planned activities to support the overall goals of the program.  The counselor is also responsible for serving as translator and liaison between staff and families.  All decisions must be guided by DHR and YMCA standards. 

 

Know How:

1. Must be 18 years of age or older.

2. Must possess a High School Diploma or equivalent.

3. Must complete a satisfactory criminal record check.

4. Prior experience working with school-age children in a group setting is preferred

5. Excellent English verbal/written communication skills.

6. Bilingual is a plus

 

Essential Functions:

§         Create an environment that provides various activities and instruction.

§         Take daily attendance at the start of the program

§         Assure the children are safe and secure at all times.

§         Establish open lines of communication with school system staff.

§         Establish open lines of communication between staff and families.

§         Provide children with assistance in completing homework assignments. Assist in planning and implementing the program according YMCA and DHR licensing guidelines.

§         Attend DHR, YMCA and other trainings as scheduled.

§         Consult with the Director(s) on concerns related to student(s) development or behavior.

§         Perform other duties as related to the delivery of a quality before-school program.

5.      Excellent verbal/written communication skills.

6.      Must receive a cleared GCIC and NCIC before working.  Annual GCIC checks will be conducted before each school year begins.

VCY Afternoon Lifeguard

GENERAL FUNCTION

Under the direction of the Program Director, the Lifeguard will provide a safe environment during swim lessons and other YMCA swim time at local pools. The Lifeguard must perform program responsibilities in accordance with the policies, goals, mission, values and objectives established by the Metropolitan Atlanta YMCA. The Lifeguard may also be called upon to support the branch’s day camp program and is an opportunity for lifeguard to learn about ropes course work.

 

KNOW HOW

1.      Current state approved CPRO/first aid certification including AED, and oxygen administration.

2.      Must hold one of the following certifications; YMCA, American Red Cross or Ellis & Associates lifeguard training, and it must be current.

3.      One or more years of experience in lifeguarding.

4.      Ability to communicate effectively with youth and adults including program participants, parents, volunteers, staff and representatives of contract pool sites.

5.      Ability to respond in a timely manner to safety and emergency situations.

6.      Must be at least 16 years of age and pass the State of Georgia criminal background check.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1.      Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to beginning of work shift. Be responsible for having necessary lifeguard equipment on deck during work time, and put away when not on duty.

2.      Assume primary responsibility for safety of pool area. Supervise YMCA recreational swimming and/or swim lessons in a responsible manner. 

3.      Maintain good public relations with parents, program participants, and pool site management.

4.      If applicable, maintain water chemistry as scheduled and report any concerns to the program coordinator.

5.      Attend meetings and/or professional training as required or requested by program director.

6.      Treat minor accidents as necessary and take appropriate actions for all incidents/accidents.

7.      Bring to the program director’s attention any condition or practice which may be considered a threat to the health and safety of members and guests.

8.      Use preventive lifeguarding techniques to minimize or eliminate hazardous situations.

9.      Be responsible for application of any information in the YMCA Lifeguard Manual and/or YMCA Employee Handbook.

10.  Required to wear branch-provided YMCA lifeguard shirt & suit.

11.  Will refrain from the use of alcohol, tobacco, or any other non-prescribed drug while on duty.

12.  Will perform all other duties as needed based on branch requirements or needs.

13.  Dress appropriate for YMCA swim environment

14.  Must work early morning shift.

 

ERGONOMIC REQUIREMENTS

Ability to lift/move, set up and store equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Also, needs to be able to demonstrate the specific skills to show technical proficiency in lifeguarding rescue techniques.  Must be able to swim 500 yards/meters non-stop and tread water for two minutes without using hands.  Must be able to hear without aid, and see victims.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • The exercise instructor is expected to keep certifications current when teaching at the YMCA.

GENERAL FUNCTION:  

Under the direct supervision of the wellness director or group exercise coordinator, the group exercise instructor shall be part of a staff team, responsible for conduct of YMCA fitness classes. The instructor is responsible for appropriate music selection; class set up and take down, education of class members in THE COACH APPROACH-An Exercise Support Process®, fitness-related issues and in forwarding the Mission and Values of the YMCA.

 

KNOW HOW: 

1.      One year or more of experience in Group Exercise participation.

2.      YMCA Healthy Lifestyles Principles, Foundations of Group Exercise, YMCA Specialty certifications (depending on what you teach – i.e. YMCA Group Cycling, YMCA Pilates, YMCA Water Fitness Instructor, Arthritis Foundation for Arthritis and Fibro.) within 6 months of employment.

3.      CPR/AED required.

4.      Pass the State of Georgia Criminal Background check.

5.      Metro Atlanta YMCA Orientation CD.

6.      Knowledge of group exercise equipment, sound system, general weight lifting, health and wellness and the ability to demonstrate, is a must. 

7.      Instructors must be knowledgeable about fitness-related issues including but not limited to aerobic vs. anaerobic exercise, nutrition, benefits of exercise, injury prevention and rehabilitation and THE COACH APPROACH-An Exercise Support Process.

8.      Instructors must have current CPR certification.

9.      High degree of human relations skills and be able to facilitate class interaction and socialization and be considered a team player by members, co-workers and management staff.

10.  Exemplify YMCA ideals and leadership qualities

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

  • The exercise instructor is expected to keep certifications current when teaching at the YMCA.
  • The exercise instructors shall agree to be ready for class to start on time, finish on time and shall agree to schedule his/her time for set up and take down necessary for efficient class performance. In addition to maintaining accurate time cards.
  • Exercise instructors are expected to exemplify the mission and values of the organization, teach and communicate those to the membership. Included in this expectation is dress appropriate for a family friendly atmosphere.
  • Exercise instructors are expected to find their own substitutes if they are not able to teach a YMCA class and communicate the substitute to the supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Exercise instructors are expected to attend mandatory staff meetings and trainings as scheduled throughout the calendar year. 
  • Exercise instructors are responsible for their own music and agree to use music suitable for a family setting. Exercise instructors further agree to dress in a manner appropriate for working in a family setting.
  • Inform your supervisor if you cannot work and find a pre-qualified sub.
  • Follow strength training and nutrition guidelines, complying with the National YMCA and ACSM guidelines.
  • Remain alert to the condition of the equipment and promptly report any concerns to supervisor.
  • Follow Metro Atlanta, Y Mutual and YMCA USA risk and safety guidelines/best practices.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive, safe, nurturing, non-threatening membership experience.
  • Seek to learn members’ names and welcome them personally.
  • Perform team assignments in Annual Partner with Youth campaign.
  • Maintain certifications by meeting continuing education requirements (YMCA certifications require 15 CEC’s every 3 years; 8 of these must be YMCA CEC’s) and keep current with trends in the field/industry.
  • Refrain from diagnosing injuries, offering medical advice, and dispensing or endorsing any and all commercial health products especially nutritional supplements, vitamins, performance enhancing substances, and pain relievers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

EFFECT ON END RESULT: 

The Group Exercise (Sub) Instructor Level I will help members see the value in sharing their YMCA experience, involvement and vision with others in their community. As a result, members will progressively report casual to connect to committed feelings toward the YMCA goal to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities. The Group Exercise Instructor Level II will be part of the team helping The Metro Atlanta YMCAs become the leader in providing health benefits to adults, youth and children by engaging them in physical activity.

 

ERGONOMIC REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to actively demonstrate exercise moves, communicate with class, aerobic capacity to perform class motions.
